It was win, win, win for the Lincoln Red beef entered into the Beef Ribs Competition at the Smithfield Festival held at the East of England showground on 2nd & 3rd December.

In all, 9 sets of ribs were entered into the competition with Lincoln Red and Lincoln Red X taking the top 3 places.

Supreme Champion, ribs from a Lincoln Red heifer owned by RE Needham and Son from Gayton-le-Wold in Lincolnshire. The heifer, born 02.03.2010, weighed 317.1kgs.

Reserve Champion, ribs from a Lincoln Red X heifer owned by Michael Read from Hemingby in Lincolnshire. The heifer, born 22.03.2010, weighed 375.3kgs.

First place for ribs from a steer, a Lincoln Red owned by Dave Stanley from Dyke in Lincolnshire. The steer, born 14.05.2009, weighed 338kgs.

With lots of interest generated around the carcass section of show, it was soon apparent that the marbling in the Lincoln Red beef was attracting a lot of attention and very good comments. The lack of the gristle line, so often seen on continental breed ribs, was certainly another factor in the choice of rib by those viewing.

NBA Beef Expo 2011 was held at Newark Showground on Thursday 26 May 2011.

The Lincoln Red Cattle Society won Best Small Breed Stand with their display of Lincoln Red cattle and for the overall appearance of the stand. Lincoln Red X cattle were also displayed to show the various breed crosses that the dairy as well as the beef sector can produce.

A main course of Lincoln Red beef was served to 400 guests at the Beef Expo dinner held at Kelham Hall on the Wednesday evening. Many compliments were received regarding the succulent tenderness of the beef.

The Lincoln Red stand was very busy during the day with enquiries for bulls, females and news about the forthcoming Autumn Sale in October.

The breed continues to gain in popularity for its low input and ease of maintenance whilst delivering a beast that commands a premium and fulfils the needs of today’s butchering trade.

The Lincoln Red Cattle Society will be at the next Beef Expo 2012 at Malvern.

THE NEXT LINCOLN RED FARM VISIT IS ON

SUNDAY 18th JULY 2010

The 2010 Farm Visit is, very kindly, being jointly hosted by Riseholme Park Farms, University of Lincoln, LN2 2GH and Geoff & Jenny Bolton, The Plantation, Horncastle Road, Wragby, Lincoln.

The Dean of Riseholme College, Val Braybrooks, has offered for us to see the many different aspects of agriculture that Riseholme are involved in at what should be a fascinating and most enjoyable Family Gathering. On view will be: the pedigree herd of 60 Lincoln Reds established in 2004 with 20 animals purchased from the Anwick Herd

10:00am : All assemble in the Conference Centre at the College for tea/coffee

10:30am : Welcome – Val Braybrooks

11:00ish : Walk to view Riseholmes’ Lincoln Reds and their Sheep – please note we will be walking. Anyone who may have difficulties should let Jayne know in order that appropriate arrangements can be made with the College – their golf carts which require pre-booking.

12:30ish : Picnic Lunch on lawns between The Old Hall and the Lake

Riseholme have advised that Parents are responsible for their own Children

Definitely – No swimming in the lake!

01:00 to 02:00pm : Campus Tours available. Those wishing to see more Lincoln Reds should make their way to :

02:00pm : Geoff (our President Elect) & Jenny Bolton’s, who have very kindly agreed to let us view their Wragby Herd. The Wragby Herd was formed in 1991 with the purchase of females from the Beverley & Kingthorpe Herds and a bull from the Walmer Herd. The Herd currently comprises 32 Lincoln Reds and their results at the Shows are testimony to the quality of cattle being bred. Interesting pasture management too.

03:00pm: Afternoon Tea courtesy of the Boltons.

Please bring your own picnic lunches and cool drinks. Robin assures us he’ll have Dennetts ice-creams!

Please remember the day is open to members and their families. Catering numbers are required for afternoon tea, so please contact Jayne (Tel: 01522 511395 or email via the contact page), if you’re planning to join us on 18th July.

Record Prices Paid

The growing interest in Lincoln Red Cattle was confirmed when a Breed Record Price was achieved for Mr H M Needler’s Maiden Heifer and Champion Female, Walmer Blossom L7, of Ranby, Lincolnshire. 2800 gns were paid at the Breed Society’s Annual Autumn Show and Sale at Newark Livestock Market on Saturday 24th October 2009, by Mr E Minshull, to add the quality heifer to his Ascot Herd in Oxfordshire.

Overall it was “ladies day”, all females forward sold, with Maidens averaging £1759 as opposed to £990 in 2008, In-calf Heifers averaging £1799 (£1276), In-calf Cows averaging £1522 (£1137) and Cows with calves at foot averaging £1519 (£1160).

The President of the Society, Mr R Dennett commented on how “positive it is to see interest in our wonderful Breed continuing to grow; the Sale Arena was packed with standing room only; both Vendors and Purchasers have come today from right across the Country”.

Pre-sale Show: the Judge was Mrs Margaret Allan (a very well Respected and Honoured Member of the Lincoln Red Cattle Society) who had, herself, travelled all the way from West Lothian. The Honours of Champion Bull and Champion Female went to Lincolnshire’s Mr H M Needler’s Walmer Keeper and Walmer Blossom L7, respectively.

The Reserve Champion Bull, Auchmacoy Lachlan, had travelled from the Auchmacoy Herd of Mrs S Buchan in Aberdeenshire. The Reserve Champion Female went to Mr H M Needler’s Walmer Herioine L35.

The Sale prices on the Bulls followed the Judges decisions with Walmer Keeper and Auchmacoy Lachlan taking top prices of 3600 gns and 2700 gns respectively. The Champion Bull, Walmer Keeper has gone to a new Lincoln Red Breeder, Mr J Birch’s Doddington Herd, in Lincolnshire.

The Bulls averaged £2394, up on Autumn 2008’s average of £2258.

The top price for Cows with calves went to Mr J Barclays’ Donington Grace F28, purchased by Mr Geoff Robinson for his 13 year old grand-daughter (from Nottinghamshire) to help her on her way to starting her own herd of Lincoln Reds. Mr Barclay is delighted that the younger generation are being encouraged in this way. The Lincoln Red Cattle Society looks forward to welcoming their first Junior Member.

The next Lincoln Red Cattle Society Spring Show and Sale is on Saturday 20th March 2010. Thank you to all who supported the 2009 Autumn Show and Sale.
